What does mfw mean in text messages
What does "TFW" mean and how do you use it?
TFW is an Internet acronym that you usually find on social networking sites and in memes across the web. But what does TFW mean, where does the acronym come from and how do you use it?
The feeling when
TFW is an Internet abbreviation that stands for “feeling when. “This acronym is usually accompanied by a funny or emotional image (like the one shown above) and is used to provide emotional context or commentary on a situation.
In some ways, TFW is more of a meme than an actual acronym that you use in a sentence, like FOMO. It usually follows a strict format where a sentence that begins with TFW is often (but not always) accompanied by an emotional photo. This phrase may be relevant to your life, e.g. B. "TFW your bathroom floods" or just a joke, e.g. B. "TFW, your friends also know Pennywise the clown."
That's not to say that TFW always follows a strict meme format. TFW advises readers on its own initiative that a message or post contains an emotional context. So it is possible that “TFW” means something on its own without an image or a message being attached.
So in some cases you could answer a ridiculous question or hateful Facebook with a simple "TFW". People who know what TFW means should understand that "this post is absolutely insane!" say. You could also reply to an unexpected message from an ex with "TFW" or reply to a funny photo with "TFW"
Etymology from TFW
Some people swear that TFW actually stands for "the face when". And in a way, they might be right.
Back in 2009 people on the 4chan Music Board (called / mu /) started saying "MFW" or "my face when". Oddly enough, MFW was used in the same way that TFW is used today. People posted a funny photo of a face along with a phrase like "MFW people call chess a sport."
Around the same time, the word "feel" developed as a slang for the word "feeling". Memes like "I know that feeling brother" spread across the internet, and the reaction image "Feels Guy" became an everyday piece of internet and nerd culture.
As with MFW, the Feels Guy meme was used to respond to emotional situations. But while MFW usually exuded disgust or awe, the meme Feels Guy has been used to describe a feeling of shame, doubt, sadness, or emasculation.
Obviously these two similar ideas merged to become 2010 or 2011 TFW - at this point TFW was first properly defined in the Urban Dictionary. While the grammatical usage of TFW hasn't changed much since then, the word has become much broader. It's a useful abbreviation for expressing emotions on the internet, a place notorious for its emotional opaqueness.
How do you use TFW?
If you throw TFW at the beginning of a sentence, readers will intuitively look for emotional context. You could say "TFW, there is no Bologna in the fridge" or "TFW, you are almost at home and the light is on".
While you could use these phrases on your own, TFW works best in conjunction with a photo or a GIF. You can technically use any photo, but it's best to use photos of emotional faces. The more emotional the photo, the easier it is for people to judge the right emotional context based on your use of TFW.
As mentioned earlier, you can also use TFWwithout accompanying words or photos. First, make sure that the situation has an obvious emotional context. While a lone "TFW" is a conversation about dogs, it doesn't make much sense to reply "TFW" to an annoying or geek text message. This can convey an idea like "Get out of my inbox" or "How are you expecting me?" to answer it? "
