Why should I get a Google Account?

How does Family Link work?

With the Family Link app from Google, parents can stay up to date on what their child or teen is doing on their Android device. They also have the opportunity to establish certain family rules for the use of digital media in their families.

The first thing a child or teenager needs is a compatible device (What devices does Family Link work with?). Parents can then download Family Link to their own Android or iOS device.

If a child or teenager already has an account, Family Link explains how parents can link their account to their child's. The child or teen may also need to download the Family Link app (for children / teenagers) on their smartphone in order for the accounts to be linked.

Parents can also use Family Link to create a Google Account for their child under the age of 13 (some countries have a different minimum age for Google Accounts). The child can then log in to their device with the new account.

Once the accounts are linked, parents can use Family Link, for example, to keep track of device usage and manage the content their children are allowed to use.

Will Family Link block all inappropriate content for my child?

No. Family Link doesn't block inappropriate content, but some apps have their own filtering options. In certain Google apps, such as Google Search and Chrome, there are filter options that can be found in Family Link. Restricted mode on YouTube is an optional setting that allows parents of teenagers 13 and older to filter out potentially adult content. These filters are not perfect. As a result, your child may occasionally see explicit, drastic, or other content that you consider inappropriate. The best thing to do is to take a look at the Family Link app settings and settings and tools. Then decide what is best for your family.
