Should a resume have a signature

Does the resume have to be signed?

A signature under the curriculum vitae confirms that your information is correct and that you wrote it yourself. If the signature is missing, it can make a bad impression.

Even if there is no hard and fast rule as to whether the résumé has to be signed, it is still a common practice. The signature gives your CV a professional and at the same time personal touch. If your resume is more than one page, sign the last page.

Isn't the signature on the cover letter enough?

Even if the signature under the CV is not an absolute "must", we still advise you to sign both documents. Complete application documents always include your signature - at Cover letter and résumé. You show that your information is true. That leaves a positive impression on the HR department.

Where do you have to sign?

The signature should be on both the résumé and the cover letter finalize the document. This also includes information on the place and date. For the résumé, this means that you sign your signature after the last station listed. In the cover letter, the signature should be placed under the final greeting and in front of the possible naming of the attachments.

What do you have to pay attention to when signing?

  1. The right pen

The choice of pen is very important for the signature. Preferably choose one Blue ink fountain pen. This is how your signature stands out from the rest of the writing on the document. Make sure that your signature is not smeared or unsightly. Fineliners or ballpoint pens are therefore less suitable. A signature with a fountain pen is not only cleaner, but also leaves a higher quality and more professional impression.

  1. The right size

Now the question arises as to how big the signature can be. In addition to legibility and completeness, the size must also be taken into account. Under no circumstances should it be squeezed to the edge at the bottom with great effort. Dropout flourishes and an oversized size are just as inappropriate. Make sure you leave enough space at the end of your document and sign with yours First and last name in approximately as big astwo lines of the printed font.

How can you sign online applications?

In the case of a digital application - both by e-mail and via an online form - the signature must not be missing. Some PDF readers offer the possibility of digitally signing documents. If you do not have this option, you can achieve a similar result with a simple trick: Sign on a sheet of white paper and scan your signature. Alternatively, a photo may be sufficient - in good lighting conditions and without shadows. The background can then be cut out with an image processing program so that the white sheet of paper is "removed" and only the signature remains. This will avoid unsightly edges. Finally, save the image file and insert it in the right place in your résumé and cover letter. Then all you have to do is save the document as a PDF - done!
