Where do flies come from

This is how to prevent flies from entering your home

One of the most annoying insects is the fly. It can be found all over the world and it is considered to be the vector of infectious diseases. Its fast, whirring flight makes it difficult to catch and extremely annoying. We have put together the most important tips here to fight flies or not to let them into the house in the first place.

This is how you prevent flies from entering your home

Flies reproduce almost daily and in large numbers under favorable conditions. Depending on the species, they only live for a few days or up to four weeks. A female can lay up to 1,000 eggs in her lifetime.

This mass increase can only be limited if you behave as hygienically as possible with leftover food and rubbish.

Flies love everything that is fermenting. So it is inevitable that the flies particularly like to hang around the garbage cans and composters. Your main diet consists of decaying organic matter. You will find them purposefully.

If there are more flies in the apartment, you should first check whether something is rotting somewhere. Old fruit magically attracts flies. Often, however, it is only juice residues in glasses that have not yet been rinsed. In the apartment, make sure that perishable food, including fruit, is not left in the room for long periods of time without a cover.

You should wash dishes as quickly as possible. But at least you should remove the leftovers and roughly clean the plates and glasses under running water.

Also, ensure that there is as little waste as possible outside the door. This includes placing all waste bins and composters as far away from the house as possible. A chemical agent can be used against fly maggots in the garbage can.

Fly screens on doors and windows

To prevent flies from entering the living space, a fly screen on the windows and doors is very effective. Fly frames and fly blinds are the most stable and practical solution because they can be opened and closed as required.

The cost is a little higher, but the protection against the flies lasts for several years. Fly traps with glue or a fly poison are also available in stores. While these traps work reliably, they can be nauseating with the dead flies. You should only use them in exceptional cases.

Protect from flies on the go

Transport all food in suitable sealed containers and packaging to keep flies away on the go. Transporting them in cool bags in particular prevents rotting or fermentation in warm temperatures.

The leftover food and rubbish should then be placed in a sealable plastic bag or container until it can be properly disposed of. You should also clean any dirt on clothing or on the body as soon as possible. The flies can even detect traces of fruit juice or sausage stalls on their hands.

But a fly net can also be helpful in the great outdoors. Use it to cover the stroller or put it over a wide-brimmed hat yourself. The principle applies always and everywhere: "Don't give the fly a chance."

Repel flies with fragrances

There are two ways to fight flies in the house: In the long term, planting peppermint, lavender or tomatoes in flower boxes in front of the windows in spring. The insects do not like the scent of these spices and stay away.

Vinegar helps against flies

Vinegar is suitable for treating acute flies in the kitchen. Drip some vinegar essence on the hot plate. This drives away the pesky insects.

By the way, the fly swatter is also a good remedy for flies. Better to get hold of several copies at the same time, which you can place in easily accessible places in the household. If a fly appears, you don't have far to go to the fly swatter and you can get rid of the fly quickly.

How to catch every fly

Flies are a nuisance. They are dirty and contribute to disease transmission. But flies are also small. Small and fast.

In the defensive fight against the annoying black hummers, this has led to a whole range of devices and tools with which humans try to gain the upper hand in the fight with the flies.

Classic: the fly swatter

The classic among the fly traps is the fly swatter. It is the right weapon for the human versus fly fight with an open visor. The fly swatter increases the reach of humans, which is usually hidden from the fly.

This allows humans to stalk the nasty insect within striking distance and hunt it down with a brave, quick blow. Experienced fly catchers also succeed in killing the fly in flight with the swatter, the less experienced are usually only successful if they devote themselves to the sitting fly.

The disadvantage of this effective remedy is therefore the unsightly red-black stains that remain on wallpaper and tablecloths as a testimony to the successful fight.

Classic 2.0: Electric fly swatter

The rapid advances in technology did not stop at the fly swatter. The contemporary form of the fly swatter is the electric fly swatter. It resembles a plastic tennis racket and is handled that way. There is a battery in the handle of this racket.

With the push of a button, it closes a circuit that runs over a fine metal grid on the club surface. The electric fly swatter is a kind of mobile electric chair for flies.

In contrast to the classic fly swatter, the device can only be used to kill the flying animal. After a sharp buzz and, if you are lucky, a small flash of light, only a few bits of chitin are left of the annoying hum. The electric fly swatter is very effective.

The electric traps

Stationary electric fly traps have been around longer than mobile devices. Electric traps are available with three different techniques for killing flies. Devices with grid tension, with suction devices and with adhesive films are on the market.

Devices with grid voltage are known to many from restaurants in southern holiday countries. In these traps, a blue light lamp attracts the flying insects. Before they reach the light, they pass a grid that is provided with an electrical voltage. After a short glow, the remains of the fly sink into a collecting tray under the device.

Electric glue traps work in a similar way, but here the grid has been replaced by a clear adhesive film to which the animals stick. Electric traps with suction devices are usually smaller. The enticing light source is located in the center of a device that draws in air. When the fly approaches the light, it is sucked up like a vacuum cleaner.

The unsavory

Adhesive strips and foils with an attractant are unsavory. The strips are hung on the window or under the lamp. The attractant is supposed to get the flies to settle on the traps, where they then stick.

These traps have some effectiveness but are not really timely because of their disgust factor.

Don't attract any flies at all

To catch flies, humans use a whole range of intelligent aids. However, it is not very smart to catch individual flies. The reproductive rate of flies is immense, so killing individual flies only marginally affects the overall population.

It is much more effective not to let the flies get into the house in the first place. Fly screens that can be retrofitted to the window frame are very suitable for this. In the house, the flies should be made uncomfortable.

This includes an embarrassing cleanliness. In the summer, there should be no leftover food or rubbish lying around in the kitchen for a short time. Such defense strategies are much more successful than trying to catch the flies.

How to tune the “Vitaminer” fly curtain from Ikea

An effective remedy for flies is a fly curtain. For example there is the “Vitaminer” curtain from Ikea. Ultimately, however, it only consists of plastic strips. They blow pretty through the area as soon as it is even a little windy.

Fortunately, the plastic strips are quite long, you have to cut them to size anyway. So there was enough plastic left to stop the curtain from fluttering. We have welded a washer at the bottom into each of the plastic strips. This was done with a very simple film sealing device like the one used for freezer bags.
