A hair transplant is a great option

Features of the methods of hair transplantation

Hair loss is justifiably extremely unpopular. The increasing hair loss is a clear sign of the human aging process. That is why thousands of men and women want full hair again and choose a hair transplant year after year. No wonder: Which man looks as good without hair as Bruce Willis or Pep Guardiola? And a woman with bald spots on her scalp will certainly feel just as uncomfortable as a bald person with an unsightly head shape. A high forehead, receding hairline, small or medium-sized tonsure, and thin hair are issues that affect both sexes. The demand for remedy through aesthetic surgery is correspondingly high: Hair transplants are now one of the most popular cosmetic medical treatments. There are various methods available to you for a hair transplant. In addition to the robot-assisted hair transplantation by ARTAS ®, we are introducing the three best-known procedures here in Frankfurt: the FUE technique, the FUT method and the DHI procedure.

What hair transplant methods are there?

The two most common hair transplant procedures are FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). Another possibility for transplanting your own hair is offered by DHI hair transplantation (Direct Hair Implantation), which is basically the same as the FUE technique. Here, only the use of a so-called "implanter" is used to implant the extracted grafts directly into the recipient's area. The usefulness of this method divides the opinions of hair experts, as the DHI method has certain advantages as well as significant disadvantages. You will receive further details during your hair consultation with us in Frankfurt. In addition to these conventional hair transplant procedures, there has been a robot-assisted alternative in the fight against the consequences of hair loss for a few years now: ARTAS® hair transplantation. We were allowed to carry out / test this treatment method, which has been celebrated as a revolution by many experts, in the Aesthetic Quartier in Frankfurt as one of only six certified locations in Germany for two years. In the course of this article we will explain how revolutionary this process really is and what advantages and disadvantages the use of the robot offers you.

We rely on the best technology

In the Aesthetic Quartier in Frankfurt am Main, we use the FUE method. The English term Follicular Unit Extraction means the removal of follicular units, so-called grafts. This procedure is one of the most modern and internationally most frequently used treatments for hair loss. With the FUE method, optimal treatment results can be achieved for both men and women. Previously only carried out to a greater extent on men, this form of hair transplantation is now being used more and more frequently on women. While men usually treat receding hairlines, smaller tonsures on the back of the head or already severely developed baldness, women are more concerned with isolated bald spots on the scalp, mostly on the crown or the hairline. Our team, led by specialists Dr. med. Joachim Beck, Sylvia Nikisch and Dr. med. Emmanouil Nichlos is very familiar with the different problems of both sexes in the field of hair and can help you with a hair transplant in any case - whether man or woman. The surgical procedure is the same for both sexes. The team of hair surgeons in the Aesthetic Quartier in the metropolis of Frankfurt am Main is internationally well-respected and has an excellent reputation, especially in the Middle East and Arab countries, but also in many of Germany's neighboring countries.

How does FUE work?

The grafts are extracted from the donor area (max. Width of four fingers above the ear) on the back of the head and, if necessary, on the sides of the head and reinserted in the bald areas in an area marked before the operation. Before the transplant, the follicles are briefly stored in a special nutrient solution with PRP (plasma content of the patient's own blood) until the final transplant and not transplanted immediately after they have been removed from the hairline (this happens with the DHI method). The individual "hair islands" (microscopic pieces of skin with up to five hair follicles) are removed by our specialist using a special hollow instrument, which enables particularly precise treatment of the grafts. The hollow needle is driven by a micromotor. The rotary movements make it easier for the hollow needle to get into the scalp. Due to the local anesthesia in the surgical area, there is hardly any pain sensation for the patient.

The advantages of FUE hair transplantation at a glance:

  • there are fewer scars
  • Grafts are removed one at a time
  • shortened healing process
  • more precise selection of hair follicles
  • more natural looking treatment result

FUT hair transplantation has some disadvantages

The FUT hair transplantation (Follicular Unit Transplantation), which we only practice in rare cases, is the oldest (active) method for transplanting our own hair. Complete strips of skin are removed from the patient's hairline. This is why this method is also known as the strip method. A major disadvantage of the FUT method, which was used more frequently in the past, is that with this quite invasive method of hair transplantation, a complete strip of skin has to be cut out of the fringe of hair on the back of the head. The FUT hair transplant is therefore more suitable for men and women with longer hair, as the treated removal area (approx. 15-18cm long cut) on the back of the head can be more easily covered by long hair in the period immediately after the operation. Depending on the number of follicles removed, surgery using this procedure can take several hours. In summary, it can be said that the FUT method only has a significant advantage over the FUE method if the person concerned has long hair. However, a FUT hair transplant does not automatically mean that the hair does not have to be shaved at all. One of our hair specialists in Frankfurt or Heidelberg will be happy to explain the further details to you.

DHI hair transplantation as the "new" alternative

The DHI hair transplant (Direct Hair Implantation) is, as it were, a slightly adapted FUE hair transplant. Here, too, individual grafts are removed from the patient. However, the extracted follicles are not placed in a nutrient solution, but are put back into the bald areas of the scalp on the back of the head immediately after they have been removed. The DHI technique is often used today for hair transplantation of the eyebrows or beard hair. The biggest disadvantage of the HDI technique is that the fine follicles are subjected to very high mechanical loads with the "implanter". The growth rate in patients with weak to normal hair robustness suffers extremely. In summary, it can be said that a DHI method is not advisable for the Central European hair type. Here we recommend the classic FUE method.

The ARTAS® hair transplant in Germany

Robot-assisted hair transplantation is already offered at over 160 locations worldwide. As one of the few specialists for hair transplants in Germany, we at the Aesthetic Quartier in Frankfurt can speak from our own practical experience about the distinction as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the individual procedures. ARTAS ® is considered to be a revolution in hair surgery circles, but even this method is not generally advisable for everyone with hair loss. If the entire framework (hair color, hair quality, number of follicles, preferred shave circumference, etc.) is ARTAS®-compliant, the robot-assisted technology can represent the prioritized route. See in our video how the ARTAS® system can reduce the transection rate (the rate of transection and damage to the implant).

The advantages of computer-assisted hair transplantation with ARTAS®

The highly developed technology of the robot can scan and analyze the structure of the hair follicle under the skin before each individual hair removal. Only after evaluating the important parameters does the system decide in a matter of seconds whether a graft (skin tissue suitable for transplantation, also known as a “hair island”) is to be removed. The system only removes the hair follicles (grafts) with the least risk of injury to the hair roots - this option is not available to hair surgeons with manual transplants. Therefore, in the field of FUE hair transplantation, it is particularly important to know what experience a provider has for the respective treatment of hair loss. If the decision is made on a manual FUE method based on relevant parameters, it is important that the hair surgery team has the maximum experience with this removal method. We at the Aesthetic Quartier Frankfurt and Heidelberg can assure you of these empirical values.

With our experience, we rely on the manual FUE method

Provided the surgical team has extensive experience with FUE hair transplantation, this method can often be the better option without the use of a hair robot. If, for example, the need for your hair transplantation does not exceed 2,500 grafts and / or if the shave should be as small as possible, the manual hair transplantation always proves to be the one that we recommend to our interested parties, and not only in terms of price-performance.
